Latest information on Npower and other social intervension programmes under Buhari administaration
UPDATE ON BUHARI SIP
Presidency explains current status of social investment programmes
As the Buhari administration proceeds with the implementation of its Social Investment Programmes, the Federal Government has now released over N375 million this year to feed almost 700,000 primary school pupils in 5 states, while virtually all states of the federation, except two, are now being processed for the payment of N30,000 monthly stipends to 200,000 graduates, the N-Power beneficiaries.
Giving a media update in Abuja on Sunday, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Office of the Vice President, Laolu Akande, said the Muhammadu Buhari Social Investment Programmes, SIP, are proceeding at different stages of implementation. According to him, regarding the Homegrown School Feeding Programme, the Federal Government last week released money for this year, to the states of Anambra, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ebonyi to cover the feeding for 10 school days. The sum of about N375,434,870 has just been released and paid to 7,909 cooks in those states for the feeding of a total of 677,476 primary school pupils.Mr. Akande gave the following breakdown:Ogun State got a total of N119,648,900 paid to 1.381 cooks to feed 170,927 pupils.Ebonyi State got N115,218,600 paid to 1.466 cooks to feed 164, 598 pupils.Anambra State got N67.5 million paid to 937 cooks to feed 96,489 pupils. Oyo State got N72. 2 million paid to 1437 cooks to feed 103, 269 pupils.Osun State got N867,370 paid to 2688 to feed 142,193 pupils. All monies are paid directly to the cooks and cover 10 days of school.Later this week, Mr Akande further disclosed, those figures would go up when Zamfara and Enugu states are expected to be paid N188.7 million and N67.2 million respectively. In Zamfara, the sum would be paid to 2,738 cooks to feed 269,665 pupils. And in Enugu, the sum would be paid to 1128 cooks to feed 96, 064 pupils.
By then, he noted that over N631 million would have been released so far in 2017 for school feeding in 7 States, paid to 11,775 cooks and meant to feed over one million primary school pupils-exact number of pupils by then would be 1, 043, 205.On N-Power, Mr. Akande stated that the process of payments of verified graduates who are beneficiaries has advanced and at different stages of progress in all but two states, noting that more and more of such beneficiaries are posting their glad experiences of receiving alerts on the social media. This means, according to him, that payment of the December stipends which has gone across the country would be completed in all states except two that did not meet the extended deadline for the verification process for December stipends. He disclosed that the processing of January stipends are also in advanced stages. He assured some beneficiaries who have issues to remain patient, while observing that quite a number of the beneficiaries have banking information irregularities. He said the payment of the unemployed graduates which has created a huge buzz across the country especially on the social media is being done in batches.Regarding the Conditional Cash Transfer, CCT, payments continue in the nine pilot states of Bauchi, Borno, Niger, Kogi, Cross Rivers, Osun, Oyo Ekiti, and Kwara States.
While payment challenges are being experienced with the banks in some of the states, beneficiaries continue to receive their stipends which is being paid for two months-i.e. a total sum of N10,000 is being paid for the CCT beneficiaries to cover the months of December and January. The CCT payments would be done 6 times in a year, with a payment of N10,000 to cover two months.

BEFORE WE SAY NO TO JUNGLE JUSTICE!!!!!!
Again! This was
the only word I could utter as I watched the yellow commercial bus (popularly
called Danfo) disappear into the busy Highway. Again, I have been dispossessed
of my phone. The week before this particular incidence, I had lost my official
phone in another Danfo in a similar circumstance. The journey was to be a
smooth one, and everything seemed so, until I alighted at my bus stop, then I
realized my phone had been removed inside the Danfo! Everything stood still for
about thirty seconds. I was shocked at my discovery. "I have been
robbed", I mumbled as if I needed to hear the words before I could
comprehend what had happened. Finally, I came out of the shock, flagged down a
commercial motorcycle (known as Okadas) to make an attempt, which turned out to
be futile in tracing my phone. That day, I thought I had lost the little
sympathy I had for thieves, irrespective of whatever might have led them to
embracing the life of crime. I was wrong.
Two weeks ago, I
watched in total disbelief and shock, the video of the gruesome lynching of a
young boy, who was caught trying to escape with his accomplice after they
attacked and robbed a man of his phone. Others were fortunate, but he wasn’t. As
expected, the angry mob vented their anger on him by first beating him to pulp
before setting him ablaze. Justice has indeed been served; the justice the mob
believes the unfortunate thief will never get if he was handed over to
appropriate authorities. Yes, it was justice; one that would even shock
barbarians in the jungle.
I remember
vividly, the smile Femi, my colleague at work had while he narrated how an
unfortunate thief that tried to steal a car was apprehended, and given a
thorough beating by an angry mob, most of whom were Femi’s friends. He narrated
how several hard objects were used on the thief and how he was let go after so
many life-threatening injuries were inflicted on him. He ended his narration
saying “I am happy we dealt with him, he got what he deserved. If he had been
handed over to the police, he probably won’t spend two hours in their custody
before he is released”.
The truth is
there are many 'Femis' in Nigeria; many who have lost hope in the Nigerian
Justice system and prefer to take laws into their hands. They believe this is
more effective than the sham called the Nigeria Justice. Each time jungle
justice is meted out on suspected criminals, the Nigerian Police, the
government and legislators are quick to condemn the act, with the Police
promising to bring the mob to justice. Empty statements that disappear after
being uttered!
However, to
eradicate jungle justice, the Nigeria police has a lot of work to do in
rebuilding its integrity and restoring the confidence of the Nigerian
citizenry. Many Nigerians see them as a bunch of unprofessional, lazy, ignorant
men in uniform who take delight in harassing and dispossessing hard working
Nigeria of their hard-earned money, while they neglect their primary
responsibility of protecting the citizens. Sadly, this is our reality; a
significant number of Nigerians have at a time experienced police brutality and
maltreatment for various reasons. Prominent amongst these reasons will be
because they refuse to part with their hard-earned money to the chagrin of the
officers. How then is the citizen expected to trust the Police with criminals
they catch, when they know such criminals could secure their freedom once they
are ready to pay the police well? It has even been reported that some criminals
boast to their about how they have the
Nigerian Police on their payroll. The Inspector General of police and his team
have to as a matter of urgency restore the integrity of the once respected
force. They need to rid the system of corrupt and unpatriotic police personnel.
This will surely go a long way in restoring the confidence of the citizens in
them. Also, the police-citizen relationship is strained. The Inspector general
needs to work on this as a good police-citizen relationship is crucial in the
fight against crime.
The Nigeria
Government needs to do more than the condemnation of jungle justice.
Unemployment has been fingered as a cause of crime. The Nigerian government
needs to overturn the rapidly growing unemployment rate witnessed in the last
decade. The youths need to be employed, and those with entrepreneurial ideas
should be empowered. I believe if this is done, crime will be greatly reduced,
if not eradicated.
Finally, the
media should increase its attention span on criminal cases. Citizens want to
know the end of criminals standing trials. Cynthia Osokogu’s case is still
fresh in my memory. The media did a good job in its covering of her unfortunate
death and how her suspected killers were arrested. However, the trial of her
suspected killers is receiving little attention from the media. Only a few
media outlets are providing updates on the trial of her killers. ALUU 4 is even
worse, there have been relatively no update on the trial of those arrested for
the death of the four undergraduates killed in ALUU community. The media needs to do more. There should be
full coverage from the time the crime was committed till the final justice
served is made known to the citizens. This might change the mind of those who
are in, or want to venture into the world of crimes.
Jungle Justice
is a barbaric act and it should not have a place in our society. However, Just
before we say NO TO JUNGLE JUSTICE,
the Government, Police and media needs to do more than condemnation in ensuring
that the Nigerian Society is completely rid of it.
Kudos to Mr. Akande Abdulwasiu for this wonderful article.

IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY
HOW IMPORTANT IS SAFETY?
It was yet another boring Saturday afternoon. I was sitting at the back of the conference center where Mr. Vincent - the safety coordinator was delivering a lecture on the need to be safety conscious at all times. I was barely listening to his lectures, all I wanted to hear was his closing verbiage “Thank you for listening”, as I needed to be in a place more important than the safety class. It was premier league match day five; and I couldn’t imagine missing the interesting fixtures lined up that day for this boring lecture. His lecture was the second safety lecture I had attended that month and tenth that year. "I have gotten enough safety tips that would last a life time", I boasted to a colleague a day before the lecture. Thankfully, Mr.Vincent rounded off his lecture before the first half of the first fixture ended. I was excited, I would not miss much of the actions. Little did I know that the safety class was more important than the football match. I soon found out.
Forty-Eight
hours after the lecture, the project management executives set up a two-man
team consisting of myself and a Chinese guy to resolve technical issues
encountered in the course of our project delivery. David was to lead the team
while I assist. David was considered to be among the most experienced Engineers
on the project, he had over 15 years experience working in the power industry
and had worked in more than six countries. He so much enjoys the trust of the
project board of directors that his suggestions are taken without
deliberations. This was indeed a special team to the board. Yes, it was. Our
first task was to replace some newly installed low capacity energy meters with
higher capacity ones. We got to work immediately, decided on the best approach
for the work, with little consideration for safety. We felt adhering to too much safety rules
wastes time. We were soon shocked! Our experience on the first site was
disastrous as the meter we were to replace exploded on my face and on David’s
right hand. I was lucky to have escaped with few hours of itchy eyes, David
wasn’t. His right hand still bears the scar of the incidence. I needn’t say
that we became safety advocates afterwards. We even acted a script that would be
played in safety classes for a very long time.
The truth is,
there are lots of people like David and I in Nigeria who despite their vast
knowledge of safety tips still feel adhering to these tips will only waste
time. "Safety rules are for learners", they'd thought. What a wrong
thought! A lot of people are currently lying in their graves, morgues or
hospital beds just because they thought the same way. No amount of time is too
much to spend on ensuring your safety! No amount of money or target is worth your
life!
I still remember
vividly, the horrific scene of an electricity incidence I witnessed a year
ago. Even the one with a lion heart
couldn’t help but shed tears as we saw what remained of the victim. No one
wants to die, talk less die horribly, yet we constantly do a moonwalk on a thin
rope between danger and safety. Everyday we are 'forced' by officials of the
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to use safety belts while driving. We engage
in lengthy fasts to God to prevent evils from befalling us, yet we close our
eyes when the driver is recklessly over-taking other cars. We need to do more.
Safety needs to be ingrained in every aspect of our lives, then we preach it to
others. Live it, then preach. Only then would we have reduced the chances of
safety related accidents.
Finally, it is
very important for everyone to act safely at all times. Our corroborative
effort is required to build a safety compliant world, where safety related
incidences will cease to exist. This can be achieved if we live, practice and
preach safety.
